Podcasts have become an integral part of the UK’s media landscape, with listenership reaching record levels in recent years. Engagement levels are also impressive, with weekly listeners spending an average of 5 hours and 27 minutes on podcasts each week (Edison Research, 2024).
Although younger audiences still dominate the space – 56% of 18–34-year-olds listen monthly – there is notable growth among older demographics, too. In fact, 28% of those aged 55 and over now listen monthly, up from just 20% in 2023. In my own household, my wife, daughter, and I are all avid podcast listeners (although we rarely agree on the same show!).
Why podcasts are a great tool for business growth
For business owners and sales professionals, podcasts represent a powerful tool to build brand authority and connect with targeted audiences, as well as a quick and easy way to learn from the pros. Hosting a podcast enables businesses to share expertise, foster trust, and engage potential customers authentically. Similarly, advertising on podcasts offers a unique opportunity, as podcast listeners tend to be highly engaged – 80% listen to all or most of each episode (Edison Research, 2024).
