What does the future hold for the UK?

In this article, Johnny Paterson, the Co-Founder of Dr.PAWPAW, talks about his initial thoughts on the new UK government

What does the future hold for the UK

Like many of you, I’m quite nervous about what the future holds for the UK. While I believe that the UK needs change, especially within the government, history has shown that not all change leads to positive outcomes. Instances such as Brexit and the Trump administration have demonstrated that the results of such shifts can be unpredictable and not always beneficial.

Change for its own sake might not always be the best solution. With the new Labour government, I am excited about the prospects for change, but I also have several concerns.

When Labour takes office, we anticipate a period of prosperity, with increased spending on government services, national infrastructure, and essential needs. This kind of investment typically stimulates the economy. However, given the financial strain from the recent economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s uncertain where the Labour government will find the necessary funds to invest.

This leads to concerns about potential tax increases. Many of my friends and colleagues have expressed a willingness to pay higher taxes if it results in tangible improvements to services like the NHS, the quality of our roads, and public safety.

My feeling comes back to this: it will be up to us—business leaders and SMEs who generate billions in revenue for the UK government and employ a significant workforce—to continue driving the economy and making the UK a great place to live. As a UK Export Champion, I am proud to work alongside the government to support British manufacturing and create wealth within the UK. I am eager to see what the next six to nine months will bring.

I would love to hear your thoughts and predictions for the coming months. Feel free to reach out to my LinkedIn and let’s have a chat.
