Twitter has been making a lot of headlines lately with the announcement that Dick Costolo was stepping down as CEO and the appointment of his successor Jack Dorsey. But not content with stealing the headlines, Twitter has decided that it now wants to curate them, revealing Moments, a new feature that will be show users the top new stories of the day.
Accessed via a lightning-bolt-shaped tab, Moments will allow users to not only see the most popular news stories but will feature what editors of the social media site believe to be the highest rated topics or events of the day. Each moment will be accompanied by a small summary of the news and will pull in photos, videos and tweets on the relevant topic for all users to see. At the launch, Anthony Noto, Twitter’s chief financial officer, demonstrated how the feature aggregated content on American football team Seattle Seahawks’ win against the Detroit Lions, pulling in photos, videos and tweets from the teams, players, fans and sport commentators.
Whilst Twitter has had a difficult ride of it of late, with Moments it definitely seems like Twitter still has some ideas to spice things up for novice users and demonstrate to the wider world that it still has plenty of innovations up its sleeve. Unfortunately for UK users, the feature is only currently available to US users of Android, iOS and web apps but there are plans to rolls the feature out to Europe at a later date.
Madhu Muthukumar, product manager for Moments, said: “We know finding these only-on-Twitter moments can be a challenge, especially if you haven’t followed certain accounts. But it doesn’t have to be. Moments helps you find the best of Twitter as easily as tapping an icon – regardless of who you follow.”
By helping users find the most interesting tweets and topics, Twitter is clearly banking on its latest feature kickstarting a whole new stage of growth for the company.
