Will AI destroy social media?

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence has sparked intense debate about its impact on social media. Some argue that AI will ultimately destroy the platforms we know today. With generative tools capable of producing endless streams of hyper-personalised text, images, and videos, critics fear that authentic human voices will be drowned out by automated noise.

The spread of deepfakes, synthetic influencers, and AI-generated commentary threatens to erode trust, making it harder for users to know what, or who, is real.

As algorithms get better at mimicking human expression, the line between genuine and fabricated content grows more and more blurry.

Yet there is another side to the argument. AI also enhances user experience by improving moderation, boosting accessibility, and helping creators with editing and creative support. Rather than destroying social media, AI could streamline it, making platforms more efficient and personalised. Many users welcome helpful recommendation systems, smarter content tagging, and tools that reduce the friction of creation.

But ultimately, recent trends on TikTok and Instagram Reels signal a clear outcome: authentic video content still reigns supreme. Despite advances in AI generation, users consistently gravitate towards creators who show their real lives, real faces, and unfiltered experiences.

The raw, spontaneous, imperfect nature of short-form video resonates in ways AI struggles to replicate. Even when AI floods the feed, people scroll past synthetic posts that are almost begging for attention and stop for genuine personality.

So while AI will reshape social media—sometimes chaotically—it won’t destroy it. Instead, it will elevate the value of what can’t be faked: human presence, energy, and authenticity.
