In this article, Johnny Paterson, Co-Founder of Dr.PAWPAW, emphasises the vital role of having a meaningful purpose at the heart of a successful business.

Starting a business with purpose is essential in today’s world, as it goes beyond mere profitability. A clear purpose inspires passion and commitment among employees, creating a work environment where individuals feel connected to something larger than themselves. Businesses driven by purpose resonate with consumers who increasingly seek brands that align with their values and contribute positively to society. Ultimately, a purpose-driven approach transforms a business into a force for good, making a meaningful impact in the community and contributing to a sustainable future.

Years ago, I read Richard Branson’s inspiring book, Losing My Virginity. Many fellow entrepreneurs will likely recognise its powerful message: if you don’t ask, you won’t get; if you don’t take action, nothing will happen. Branson’s insights taught me that as entrepreneurs, we truly have the power to make a difference. 

When Pauline and I founded Dr.PAWPAW, we were determined that once our business reached a sustainable scale, we would leverage our success to give back. We envisioned collaborating with charities and undertaking challenges to raise funds and awareness.

Our journey began in 2018 when we partnered with Crisis. We volunteered to pack Christmas gifts and made our first significant donation of over £18,000. Since then, we have worked closely with the Teenage Cancer Trust, completing various challenges such as marathons, the Three Peaks Challenge, Tough Mudder, and most recently, the 100km Thames Path Ultra Challenge.

To date, we have raised over £130,000 for charity. You may wonder why we do this. Simply put, we believe that while a business’s primary goal is to earn money and provide excellent products, it can—and should—do more. A business can educate its team, foster a sense of belonging, and promote personal growth.

At Dr.PAWPAW, we strive to create fun, enjoyable products that bring joy to our customers, whether through our lip balms or skincare items. As we continue to grow, we want our customers and team to know that their choices make a difference. Every time a customer buys one of our products, they are supporting natural, vegan, and ethical choices that contribute to charity.

In today’s world, having a meaningful purpose beyond selling beauty products (in our case) is essential. Purpose-driven businesses not only create positive change in their communities but also cultivate a sense of fulfilment among their teams and customers. This commitment to giving back and creating a positive impact is what we aspire to uphold now and in the future at Dr.PAWPAW. By aligning our business with a purpose, I hope to inspire other entrepreneurs to do the same, demonstrating that success is not just about profits but also about the positive influence we create along the way.
