Why traditional New Year goal setting isn’t working – And what to do instead

The start of a new year is often synonymous with fresh starts, big plans, and the inevitable New Year’s resolutions. You know the ones – “I’ll lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, save more money, and so on.” But let’s be honest, how often do those resolutions actually stick? For most, they fizzle out faster than the leftover fireworks from December 31st. In fact, studies by Inc Magazine show that only 8% of people achieve their goals.

Here’s the thing: traditional goal setting often sets us up for failure because we focus too much on the outcome and not enough on the process. As someone who’s spent years coaching individuals and teams to SMASH IT!® in their personal and professional lives, I’ve learned one thing: big change doesn’t happen by accident—it happens through strategy and action.

Step one: Understand your ‘Why’

If your goals don’t have meaning, they won’t have momentum. When I work with individuals, I always start by asking, “Why is this goal important to you?” It’s easy to say you want to earn more or do better, but what’s the deeper motivation? Maybe it’s financial security for your family, building a legacy, or creating balance in your life. Whatever it is, knowing your “why” makes it easier to push through the tough days when motivation starts to wane.

When your why is strong you can’t go wrong.

Step two: Set goals that stretch you (But don’t snap you)

Effective goals should strike a balance between ambition and realism. They need to push you beyond your comfort zone without becoming so overwhelming that you lose focus or momentum. A goal that challenges you just enough will keep you motivated and moving forward.

Start by breaking your big goals into smaller, more manageable chunks. Want to grow your business by 50% this year? Brilliant! Now break it down: What does that look like monthly? Weekly? Daily? Small, consistent actions compound into big results.

Step three: Build accountability systems

Here’s the truth: nobody achieves great things in isolation. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a team leader, or someone looking to hit personal milestones, accountability is key. Share your goals with someone you trust – a mentor, a colleague, or even your partner – and check in regularly. Public commitment can do wonders for sticking to your plan.

Step four: Embrace the detours

Now, let’s talk about something I think is critical: flexibility. Life rarely goes exactly to plan, and neither will your goals. Instead of beating yourself up for setbacks, ask yourself, What can I learn from this? and What’s my next step? Progress isn’t always linear, but it’s always possible.

Step five: Measure progress, not perfection

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is tying their success solely to the end goal. Don’t wait until December 31st to feel accomplished! Celebrate the small wins along the way. Remember, every step forward is a step closer to where you want to be.

A personal challenge for 2024

This year, I challenge you to ditch the resolutions and focus on setting actionable, meaningful goals instead.

Whether it’s growing your business, becoming a better leader, or finally finding that elusive work-life balance, remember: success doesn’t happen overnight. It happens one day, one step, and one decision at a time.

Here’s to your success in 2024 – now let’s make it happen!
