From bustling cities to remote towns, microbusinesses across the UK are helping to drive post-pandemic recovery by adopting digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI). Each additional digital microbusiness per resident is associated with an average increase of approximately five jobs per resident*.

Innovative solutions and cutting-edge tools empower microbusinesses – those with an active website and the majority with fewer than 10 employees – to lead the pack in setting new industry standards and reshaping commerce on a national and global level. However, as customer expectations continue to evolve, keeping up-to-date with the latest industry trends, technologies and developments is a must.

This can present a challenge for small business owners – often strapped for time and cash – who need to stay ahead of evolving customer expectations. GoDaddy’s Venture Forward provides unique insights on developing e-commerce trends.

Software and IT, restaurants and home decor highlight growing industries

GoDaddy research shares annual changes for customers who use GoDaddy for e-commerce in revenue, orders, and sellers by industry (as self-assigned). It found that, from August 2023 to August 2024, software and IT, restaurants and home decor had the highest total revenue growth.

In an increasingly digital age, the software and IT sector’s 344% gain in online revenue growth across the industry was the highest in the UK.

As social events for anniversaries, birthdays and family reunions return to pre-pandemic regularity, a window of opportunity has opened for UK entrepreneurs with experience working in the food industry. Restaurants and suppliers experienced the second-highest online revenue growth, which saw a 278% gain from 2023.

Rounding out the top three, home decor services experienced a 273% gain – highlighting the demand for interior designers and decorators in the UK microbusiness landscape.

This data underscores historical trends, such as the peak of wedding-related services post-lockdown followed by a continual decrease as inflation eased – a trend which has seemingly also applied to public spaces (such as parks, aquariums and art museums) in the past year, resulting in a 99% decline in total online revenue.

This varied community of microbusiness owners weave a diverse economic future across the UK. For those working in software and IT, restaurants and home decor or any other industry, GoDaddy Website Builder is packed full of helpful tools like online appointment services, allowing customers to schedule block-based calendar appointments, one-time events (including multi-day events) and repeating events.

UK microbusinesses demonstrate major growth in numbers

According to the new 2024 annual report, the top constituencies in the UK with the highest microbusiness growth are spread across the county, though a clear pattern emerges around the city of London. The more purple the colour, the more microbusinesses per 100 people.

Stoke-on-Trent Central has grown 57% in microbusiness count in the last year – the highest in the country during that period by a significant margin – to 1,623 total microbusinesses, highlighting not only the rapid expansion of microbusinesses outside of London, but the entrepreneurial spirit and economic vitality present across entire country.

AI-powered tools, are providing valuable customer insights to microbusiness owners

Customer insights are crucial for entrepreneurs to improve decision-making, better product or service development and craft more targeted, relevant messaging. It takes an agile firm to continuously evolve alongside changing markets.

However, behaviours, preferences and pain points can vary greatly by industry.
