Why April was our best month ever (Despite my worries)

How did I go from preparing for a tough month to celebrating our best one yet? It all came down to focusing on what I could control and finding ways to stay visible when it mattered most

As we move through 2025, I’ve been reflecting on April, a month that turned out to be the most successful one so far in my business. When this year began, I had a sense of dread. Rising costs, both for our business and our clients, had me worrying about how it would affect everyone. It felt like things were lining up for a disaster, and I braced myself for a difficult April, as the dreaded month of increased costs got closer.

But instead of the disaster I was expecting, April ended up being an unexpected success. We saw a 17% increase in business, surpassing our previous best. So how did we get here? How did I go from preparing for a tough month to celebrating our best one yet? It all came down to focusing on what I could control and finding ways to stay visible when it mattered most.

The power of visibility

When things feel out of control, it’s easy to focus on the external pressures. Rising costs, the challenges of running a business, and the uncertainty that can come with it all – it’s easy to be consumed by the noise. But what I’ve learned is that staying visible is something we can control.

In the months leading up to April, I made a conscious effort to show up in spaces where our message could be heard. I was speaking at events, recording podcasts, and joining conversations that aligned with our mission. In March alone, I spent nearly 30 hours doing live speaking engagements, not as a way to sell or promote, but to contribute to discussions that were relevant to the moment. I wasn’t trying to close deals or increase sales; I was focused on connecting, sharing insights, and learning from others.

This visibility had a ripple effect. People reached out, wanting to discuss their own challenges and how they could apply what I was sharing. It wasn’t about pushing products or services; it was about offering a platform for open dialogue and sharing experiences.

A time to refine, not panic

It’s easy to panic, to think that we are facing an insurmountable economic challenge. But panic doesn’t help, and neither does shying away from what we can offer. Instead, I turned inward to look at what we were doing well and where we could do better.

At Moja, we’ve always been focused on building strong relationships, but in 2025, I’ve realised the importance of doubling down on this. It hasn’t been about selling a specific service or package. Instead, it’s about showing up for people, being part of the conversations that mattered, and providing insight when it’s needed most.

I spent time reflecting on how we could refine our services to meet the current needs of business owners. I noticed that many were grappling with the same uncertainty I was feeling – how to maintain momentum in a time when things felt unpredictable. And through conversations and connections, it became clear that more people were looking for ways to build a lasting presence, whether that was through sharing their knowledge or strengthening their personal brand.

Finding strength in action

One of the biggest lessons I took away from April’s success was the importance of taking action – especially when you’re feeling uncertain. It would have been easy to retreat, to assume that the financial pressures meant we should hunker down and ride things out. But by taking action and showing up, staying consistent, and continuing to offer value, we were able to create something bigger than we expected.

When I started the month feeling unsure about what would happen, I made a conscious decision to stay engaged, to keep creating and contributing. In doing so, we built on the momentum we already had, even though I wasn’t sure where it would lead. I started conversations, joined networks, and connected with. It wasn’t about finding the ‘perfect’ answer or solution. It was about staying open, being responsive, and allowing things to unfold.

Lessons for the future

Looking back on April, I’m reminded of how important it is to focus on what you can control, especially when things feel uncertain. Rising costs, market shifts, and other external factors can feel overwhelming, but instead of letting those things dictate our success, I chose to focus on the parts of the business that I could actively engage with.

It’s easy to get bogged down by the big picture and worry about things that are out of our hands. But the lesson I’ve learned is that when we focus on staying visible, staying engaged, and staying consistent, the unexpected can happen. We can weather the storms and emerge stronger, not because everything is perfect, but because we showed up – even when we weren’t sure of the outcome.
