The ‘Quiet Five’ business rules that made the loudest difference

After years of building and backing businesses, entrepreneur Andrew Scott reveals the five guiding rules that shaped his success from the inside out

The ‘Quiet Five’ business rules that made the loudest difference

I’m often asked by would-be entrepreneurs what is the ‘key’ to my success; if there’s a magic formula or a set of top-secret principles I’ve stuck to over the years that have somehow guided my good fortune.

It’s lovely to believe that out there somewhere lies the business gold at the end of the rainbow. Yet, the reality is that success is not complicated. It is not about luck or genius, waiting for perfect timing or even (despite my Irish upbringing) rainbows and pots of gold. It is about doing the right things, staying focused and not letting the setbacks knock you off course.

The five thoughts about entrepreneurial success I am about to share are not theories. They are real, because I’ve lived them, carrying me through good times and bad. They are simple, but they are not easy. If you apply them with honesty and consistency, they will take you far. If you ignore them, you will struggle and wonder why nothing is working.

Own it. Always…

You cannot change anything until you take full responsibility. This was the first big shift I made in my own life. Like a lot of people, I used to blame other people, or the system or the past. But blaming never helped. It just kept me stuck.

Things only started to move forward when I stopped asking ‘why’ and started asking ‘what now?’ When you own your part, you get your power back. You are no longer a victim of the situation. You become the one who shapes what happens next.

I have made mistakes over the years. But I have never grown more than in those moments where I looked them straight in the eye and said, ‘This is on me. Now what am I going to do about it?’

Move fast, learn quickly

I have never had the luxury of waiting until something was perfect. If I had, I would never have started. I launched projects when I was broke. I made deals without knowing if they would come off. I took risks that scared the life out of me.

But here’s the truth. Waiting is often just fear in disguise. You tell yourself you are being cautious or strategic, but really, you’re afraid. I know, because I have done it too.

The answer is to start. Get it out there and watch what happens, then improve it. This approach saved me more than once. Some of my best decisions came after failing fast, listening, adjusting and going again.

See it clearly

We all lie to ourselves. We pretend things are fine when they are not. We tell ourselves people care more than they do and we stay loyal to bad ideas because we have already poured so much into them.

Seeing things clearly is not about being hard on yourself. It is about being honest. Ask the right questions. Is this working? Is it worth it? Am I lying to myself? Then act on the answers.

Build your tribe

Nothing good happens in isolation. For years I thought I had to prove myself on my own. But I learned the hard way that progress is quicker when you have the right people around you.

I do not mean chasing contacts or working the room. I mean building real relationships with people who believe in you,  who tell you the truth and challenge you to grow.

Some of the biggest breakthroughs in my life came from a quiet chat over coffee, or a friend picking up the phone at just the right time. If you help others without keeping score, if you show up and do the work, the right people will show up too.

Play the long game

I have come close to walking away more times than I care to admit. After the collapse of my business 20 years ago, after losing my home, after getting into serious debt, it would have been easy to quit.

But something in me said, ‘Keep going. One more phone call. One more day. One more plan.’ And little by little, it worked.

That is how I made it through. Not with brilliance or luck, but with grit and the willingness to get back up when everything was telling me to stay down. These five rules are not tricks or slogans. As I’ve mentioned, they are real because they took me from where I was to where I am now. And they can help you too, if you let them.

Success is not about being perfect. It is about being honest, being brave and staying in the fight. Do that, and you are already ahead of most people.
