New healthtech accelerator aims to ensure UK startups are at the forefront of the fight against expensive medicine

At a time when the cost of healthcare has forced over 100 million people into poverty, it’s easy to see the need for more innovators to heal this wound. Fortunately, a new accelerator looks to position UK startups at the frontline of treating this ailment.

The healthtech accelerator HS. is the result of a partnership with clinical and business experts including Healthcare UK, MedCity, the BMJ, Department for International Trade, Johnson & Johnson and Philips. The new institution isn’t resting on its laurels and has already selected its first cohort of 30 healthtech entrepreneurs handpicked from 1,000 candidates to operate in the $21bn healthtech sector.

But being able to take a slice of the budding market isn’t the only reason why startups lined up to join HS.. They naturally jumped on the opportunity to be led by Alex Young, CEO and co-founder of HS. who, has experience of running Virti, the video-based healthcare-training platform for professionals, and James Somauroo, his co-founder and CPO, who has previously spearheaded the launch and running of DigitalHealth.London, the £3.4m health accelerator.

Commenting on the launch of HS.,  Young said: “The HS. founding team [has] broken down the traditional model of accelerator programmes and rebuilt it specifically for building, scaling and innovating in healthcare while putting patients first. With our first cohort of businesses on board and the programme now open to corporate partners, we look forward to guiding their journey in tackling some of the world’s biggest healthcare problems with technology.”

With support like this, we’re certain that UK healthtech startups will be well-placed to a help cure the epidemic of expensive healthcare around the world.
