What is 5G and how can it benefit UK’s economy?

Digital is the way forward. We are all connected by our smartphones 24/7 keeping up to date with vital information we need on a day-to-day basis. With superfast “fifth generation 5G” mobile internet now in the works, people can expect faster data and quicker download speeds. Infact, 5G could provide a multi-billion pound boost to London in less than a decade to come, according to new research by Vodafone.

5G is said to be 10 to 20 times faster than 4G. The new network will completely transform the way people connect to the internet on their phones, taking the UK’s digital age to the next level. Increased levels of productivity from users will help boost London’s economy, and is expected to bring in an astounding £30 billion by 2030, according to research by UK’s leading mobile franchise, Vodafone.

Vodafone began rolling out its 5G coverage in July this year. Southwark in London is one of the many areas across the capital where customers can experience the greater quality and reliability 5G mobile internet has to offer. Vodafone has 5G in more places than any other operator, with 77 towns and cities now live across the UK and Europe.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan opened Vodafone’s new £6.5 million digital hub, known as The Speechmark in the capital last Thursday, as the company continues to spearhead new investments into creative and digital expertise. Vodafone currently invests around £1 million per week to upgrade and improve their network across London in order to keep up with the increasing demand for data.

The company currently facilitates three million gigabytes per week from customers across the region – equivalent to streaming Netflix in HD for 115 years. In a new exciting partnership with Transport for London (TfL), Vodafone now plans to launch wireless internet in tubes and trains.

Vodafone will test wireless connectivity in tunnels and at station platforms on the eastern end of the Jubilee line with hopes to make its 4G network accessible to all customers by Spring 2020. This will allow Vodafone users to make calls, stream video, download content while on the tube – with the potential for 5G connectivity in the future.

“London is on track to become the world’s leading smart city, and the move to 5G has the potential to make the capital a global trailblazer in civic innovation,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said. “By working with providers like Vodafone we can develop the best technologies that will boost our economy and meet the needs of Londoners, radically improving how we live and work.”

5G can help increase productivity across several industries, making the workforce more efficient as mobile data is transmitted at a faster rate than ever before.

“5G will enable a whole new generation of digital services capable of improving transportation, housing, and connectivity across the capital,” Vodafone UK CEO, Nick Jeffery, said. 5G will transform the way we live, how and where we do business, and improve how productive we can be at work.”

The potential benefits of 5G is astounding. When it becomes available, businesses can tap into a new technology and advance like no other. However, companies must prepare for the shift in order to gain the most out of it and achieve performance improvements.
