Winners of Lloyds Bank National Business Awards revealed

Paul Brown, founder of BOL Foods, won Lloyds Bank New Business of the Year award

Kicking off a successful enterprise is no mean feat and entrepreneurs often sacrifice their personal lives to get their business of the ground and their achievements often go unnoticed. That’s why celebrating their accomplishments is so important, which is why the country’s top entrepreneurial talent was recognised at the prestigious Lloyds Bank National Business Awards last night.

Over 1,200 business leaders, entrepreneurs, politicians and media representatives gathered at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane for the 15th annual awards ceremony and saw Sir James Dyson, the founder of Dyson, the home appliances company, walk away with the gong for Excellence in Business.

But while Dyson may have been in the game for decades, the awards also celebrated new entrepreneurs. For instance, the honour of receiving the Lloyds Bank New Business of the Year award – which Elite Business’s editor Josh Russell helped judge –  went to BOL Foods, the food company. However it wasn’t the only new startup to make the prestigious list.

Fintech businesses also had a stellar night. Given that the bulk of the 50 tech startups who received the most funding last year were fintech businesses, it’s hardly surprising that two entrepreneurs from the sector would be amongst the winners. Jeff Paterson and Oliver Du Toit, co-founders of Fourex, the fintech startup, left the ceremony with the Duke of York New Entrepreneur of the Year award.

In the past few years, multiple entrepreneurs have launch businesses devoted to saving the environment and these businesses didn’t go unnoticed during the ceremony. OVO Energy, the green energy company, was rewarded with the Smith & Williamson Scaleup Business of the Year award.

Technology was also celebrated by bestowing FanDuel, the fantasy sports company, and M Squared, the laser and photonics company, with the title of Amazon Digital Business of the Year and the Samsung Innovation Award respectively. Commenting on the winners, Tim Hinton, head of mid markets and SME banking at Lloyds Banking Group, said: “Innovative and thriving businesses such as these are vital for the success of the UK so that we can continue to create jobs and grow the economy.”

Given how challenging entrepreneurship can be we can certainly get behind the sentiment that it’s essential that the startup community celebrate entrepreneurial excellence. And if you want to check out the full list of winners or throw your hat into the ring for next year, entries are now open for 2017 on the awards’ website.
