Online purchases get ditched due to poor shipping options

E-commerce retail has become so prevalent that it’s effectively forcing some high-street stores to close. But consumers are still unimpressed with the shipping options they face. In fact, many are so disappointed with these options they’ve stopped shopping at vendors completely, according to a new report by SaaS e-commerce provider BigCommerce.

With 45% of consumers purchasing online at least once a week, shipping values are definitely at the top of their radar. The data reveals a dislike of online shipping options has prompted 73% of consumers to desert their shopping cart. Moreover, 35% of consumers have stopped shopping with an online retailer altogether because of a bad shipping experience.

The report also found 87% of shoppers have added items to their shopping to receive free delivery and 80% have made purchases from an online retailer because they offer free shipping. Furthermore, 44% of shoppers avoid online sites that don’t offer free shipping and 32% of consumers want the choice of picking up items from physical stores rather than delivery.

It’s evident consumer shipping needs are not being fully fulfilled so, in order to thrive, online retailers need to both acknowledge and address these concerns so they can retain loyal customers.
