Two thirds of mums consider starting home businesses in order to care for kids

Increase of ‘mumpreneurs’ likely as Direct Line for Business survey reveals 20% of mums want to look after children and save on childcare costs

Two thirds of mums consider starting home businesses in order to care for kids

Our antiquated Victorian ancestors would be spinning in their graves if they got a load of this. Research conducted by Direct Line for Business has revealed that nearly two thirds of mums with children under the age of ten are considering starting a business from home within the next three years, with 20% surveyed wanting to do so in order to spend more time with their little angels.

And that’s not all. With the average cost sitting pretty at around £12,000 for full-time childcare for two kids, almost half of the 721 mums quizzed believed they would be more financially sound if they started a home business, whilst 16% are actually motivated to set up shop for this reason alone. Here’s the breakdown of the main reasons that mums want to start a home business:

  • More time with children (20%)
  • Cost of childcare (16%)
  • Flexibility of being own boss (14%)
  • Lifelong ambition to run a business (12%)
  • Unhappy in current job (1%)

Jazz Gakhal, head of Direct Line for Business, shared the respondents’ sentiments. “The costs of sending a child to day care, or hiring a nanny continue to spiral,” she said. “It’s great to see that mums are tackling this problem with such an entrepreneurial spirit, as they understand considerable childcare cost savings can be made by running a business from home.”

She did however have a warning for ambitious mothers. “While launching a business from home has many benefits, it also brings its own set of challenges,” Gakhal continued. “These ventures often require substantial financial investment, alongside the time and effort required to build a business from scratch.”

With a lot less need to spend time in stuffy offices thanks to the wonders of technology, we feel lots of parents are more able than ever to consider this a viable option. Don’t tell your current employer just yet though, in case your boss figures out your plans for world domination. In other words, keep mum.
