Tech startups are changing the face of the British workplace and the rate of jobs is growing at a quicker rate than positions can be filled. Research released today reveals that tech hubs are hiring for 8,554 positions this year, up 80% since 2013. What other industry can boast this kind of development?
The figures are part of a report released today by Silicon Milkroundabout, the tech recruitment events organiser, and Adzuna.co.uk, the job search engine. It shows that London and the South East have the biggest pull, boasting 60% of all tech startup jobs, while the likes of Northern Ireland and Wales are lagging behind with 2% each.
“These new figures show tech startups in the UK are accelerating their hiring efforts and can offer exciting high-growth opportunities combined with top salaries,” said Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna. “Just like in Silicon Valley or New York, well-funded and profitable startups have levelled the playing field and can compete directly on salaries with the City and big tech companies for the most talented people.
The figures also show that tech startup salaries are on the rise in the UK, with a software developer, for example, earning on average £46,511 per annum, which is 26% more than the tech industry average of £36,770. Designers can make around £46,511, a massive 47% above the £31,639 average.
“This data backs up the feeling those of us on the inside have had for a while – that the UK tech scene is exploding,” says Pete Smith, a co-founder of Silicon Milkroundabout.
“Not only has the number of jobs on offer nearly doubled in 12 months but salaries continue to outpace industry averages. And as these high-growth technology companies mature, they need teams drawn from all disciplines. We’re saying to every marketer and salesperson we can find: this is a great time to join a tech company.”
