Julie Deane launches independent review of self-employment in the UK

Self-employment can be incredibly rewarding: there’s nothing quite as thrilling as building your own roster of clients and knowing the fruits of your efforts are yours alone. However, self-employment is far from plain sailing and it would be nice to know someone has your back when fighting through tax struggles or wrestling with your pension. Fortunately, Julie Deane, founder and CEO of The Cambridge Satchel Company, is here to help. The former EB cover star is set to carry out an independent review on the opportunities and difficulties facing the UK’s self-employed.

Launching today, Deane’s review will inform the government on the reasons why people become self-employed; the different forms of self-employed professionals working in the UK, including freelancers, sole traders and those who work for themselves; the obstacles faced by the self-employed; and how the UK can formulate a more supportive environment for self-employment. It will also look at providing more security and peace of mind to those working for themselves, identifying what can be done to help them balance work with having a family, buying a home or planning for retirement.

“I am delighted that Julie Deane has agreed to carry out this review, with her own extensive experience of starting out on her own,” said prime minister David Cameron. “Her review will shine a light on self-employment, a key part of our long term economic plan, looking at what can be done to provide more security and peace of mind for people wanting to work for themselves.”

Deane said: “The business landscape has changed so much in the last ten years and in such a way that self-employment is now a viable option for so many more people. I have first-hand experience of the immense opportunities starting your own business can bring but also understand the challenges that can face those starting out on their own. I hope this review will help others in the future to turn their ideas into successful businesses.”

Whilst the final report isn’t due until early 2016, we’re sure it will give the self-employed a boost to know someone is in their corner.
