Around eight million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year. With the impacts of climate change dawning on our planet, we must keep a conscious mind on the products we buy. Now, three men have found the solution to reducing plastic bottle waste, revolutionising the way we drink water.

Ariel Booker, Josh White and Perry Alexander founded CanO Water, a company that distributes drinkable water using recyclable aluminium cans as an alternative to single-use plastic bottles.

The three friends decided to set up their company after embarking on a trip to Thailand. During their holiday, they were horrified to witness the country’s streets littered with disposed plastic bottles and non-recyclable waste. It was then they realised they had to make a change.

“When Josh, Perry and I visited Thailand several years ago, we were disgusted at the damage we saw – it was a far cry from the beautiful picturesque scenes portrayed by tourist boards. We instantly felt it was our responsibility to make a positive change and from that day forward, we have never looked back,” Ariel Booker, Co-Founder of CanO Water said.

The trio began brainstorming for a more sustainable solution to plastic bottles and came up with a canned water alternative, and CanO Water was born.

Each can contain high quality Spring Water sourced from the Alps, and is the first of its kind to come with resealable ring pulls – so you can close your canned water to drink at a later time, preventing further waste.

Aluminium is one of the most recyclable materials in the market, and is recycled more than twice as often as plastic, glass and cartons, according to statistics by aluminium.org.

Plastic takes up to 1000 years to degrade and can have a severe impact on the planet, polluting oceans, contaminating food and killing marine life and birds at an alarming rate.

This leaves millions of sea creatures swimming in plastic waste for decades to come.

CanO Water was created to “save the planet” and as consumers are now becoming more invested into preserving the environment, the brand continues to excel and reach greater heights.

In 2015, environmentally-friendly companies weren’t that great of a hype leaving the three friends stuck for years with little support from investors.

“It hasn’t been easy and it was far from simple to start this revolution back in 2015 when it wasn’t a) seen as a problem and b) the plastic conversation wasn’t in the mainstream media like it is today. Drinking water out of a can would have also seemed alien to most. In fact, we were laughed out of most meetings and we were told we were crazy for years,” Mr Booker said.

Now, CanO Water supplies across the UK to hotels, independent companies and various other businesses in Europe and Asia.

Customers will be able to dispose their cans for recycling and see it be back on the shelves in as little as six weeks, which is how long the recycling process takes.

“The concept for CanO Water is simple: recycle your can, and it will be back on the shelf in as little as six weeks. Our mission is to spread this message (and our cans) far and wide to create a strong business model and incredibly important public behaviour change which will save our oceans,” Mr Booker added.

CanO Water is available for £1.00 across UK’s major retailers including Tesco, Ocado, Selfridges and Harrods.

As global warming continues to rise at a rapid rate, we can now play our part by choosing recyclable products to reduce our carbon footprint and help the planet.
