Pet projects are the latest trend in side-hustles and start-ups

Since the start of the pandemic, people across the UK have turned to side-hustles to help supplement their earnings. And as a company that empowers everyday entrepreneurs with all the tools they need to succeed online, GoDaddy supports all kinds of businesses. One of the most interesting and heart-warming trends we’ve seen recently is an increase in people putting their pets in the spotlight.

GoDaddy’s new research reveals that there are now more than four million ‘entre-paw-neurs’ in the UK, pet’s earning money for their owners through brand partnerships and merchandise sales. What’s more, the number is set to soar in 2022, with 32% of pet owners looking to turn their animals into online stars over the next 12 months.

As a result, GoDaddy estimates there could be an additional 5.3 million ‘entre-paw-neurs’ in the UK by the of 2022. Our research reveals that, on average, they could earn an average of £15,2243 a year, with dogs (£15,627) commanding higher fees than cats (£12,895).

Whilst social media is a popular way for people to promote their pooches, dedicated pet websites are becoming an increasingly important awareness tool. We estimate that there are already around 3.6m specific pet web sites in the UK set-up to help publicise ‘entre-paw-neurs’.

This fast-growing market is not surprising, perhaps, when two fifths (39%) of the British public say they are more likely to buy products from brands who associate themselves with cute animals.

The opportunity for pet owners is therefore sizeable, and to help people hoping to create the next ‘Bark Zuckerberg’ or ‘Kim Kardachshund’, here are GoDaddy’s top tips to make the business a roaring success:

Be savvy about social media and connect your pet’s website directly with their social media profiles. Streamline your social media activity by using a website builder tool to post and respond without having to leave your control panel, in just a few clicks.

Show off your canine companion or your feline friend with engaging and compelling images. We’re a nation that loves pet pictures, but it is not always easy to get our pampered pooches or coiffured cats to behave and pose for pictures. Content marketing tools, usually come with a range of customisable templates and features to help you create high-quality images to ensure your pet will stand out from the crowd.

If you aspire for your customers to become as loyal as your furry companion, focus on converting your website visitors into long-lasting advocates. Effective email marketing will help you create campaigns and sign up forms to capture the interest of first-time visitors and encourage them to return.

Make it easy for people to find your pet’s website by improving your SEO. SEO tools can take the guesswork out of keyword selection to help increase the visibility of the website. Be sure to track your website rankings to check your SEO efforts are working, and adjust accordingly.
